Weekly Funding Opportunities Listing – October 18, 2011

Below are funding opportunities of interest that I have learned about/received RFP notifications about in the past week that I wanted to share.

Boating

Non-Profit Boating Safety Grants

Deadline: January 27, 2012

The majority of funds are allocated to the States and U.S. territories via a formula fixed in the law. However, up to 5% of the total grant funds available each year are set aside for awards to national non-profit public service organizations to support national boating safety activities.

The primary goal of the National Recreational Boating Safety Program is to reduce casualties to specified levels for each upcoming year. Any initiative that can help to reduce recreational boating deaths, injuries or property damage is welcomed. Potential applicants should focus on partnership, i.e., exploring other sources, linkages, in-kind contributions, cost sharing, and partnering with other organizations or corporations.

Film

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation

Deadline: December 2, 2011

The Media, Culture, and Special Initiatives program is accepting proposals for documentary film projects between November 1, 2011 to December 2, 2011.
The program seeks to fund documentary projects that address the significant social challenges of our time or explore important but under-reported topics. Domestic and international topics are welcome, and preference will be given to projects that align with one of MacArthur's grantmaking areas. Support will be provided primarily for production and post-production activities, and to experienced filmmakers based in the U.S. with a track record of completing feature-length films that have been broadcast nationally and internationally.

In selecting documentary films for support, the Foundation looks for the following:
• Projects that address important, contemporary social topics – international or domestic
• Projects that align with MacArthur's programmatic interests in the U.S. and International Grantmaking areas
• Projects that follow an issue over time, providing in-depth reporting that goes beyond conventional news coverage
• Projects that utilize compelling personal stories to engage viewers and create empathy
• Projects that appeal to a broad audience because they are accessible, interesting, and balanced (treats different points of view respectfully)
• Projects that have a strong likelihood of broadcast in the U.S. and elsewhere, and thoughtful plans for broad dissemination in educational, community, or policy settings

Health

Cardinal Health Foundation

Deadline: December 2, 2011

Cardinal Health develops and supports programs that help healthcare providers implement best practices that can truly transform patient care. Between 2008 and 2011, the Cardinal Health Foundation invested more than $10 million, in a wide variety of programs, to improve healthcare efficiency, cost-effectiveness and quality.

Again this year, the Cardinal Health Foundation will award $1 million in grants to healthcare institutions to impact the efficiency and quality of care. Grants between $15,000 and $35,000 will be awarded to approximately 40 organizations in 2012.

Focus areas include:
1. Medication safety across transitions of care
2. Implementation of WHO checklists in the operating room

Parks

Parks & Trails – NY Capacity Building

Deadline: November 16, 2011

Parks & Trails New York’s Capacity Building Grants program for park and trail groups provides grants of up to $3,000 to strengthen not-for-profit organizations that are working to build and protect parks and trails in communities across the state.

The program is unique in that supports activities not normally covered by existing grants. While a number of grants are available to not-for-profits, they usually only fund capital projects and specific programs; they don’t help organizations develop and strengthen the skills, processes, and resources that they need to survive and thrive.

*All potential applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in a pre-application conference call to be held Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. This call will be designed to review the application form and answer questions from potential applicants. The call in number is (712) 432-0180. Participant Access Code: 786019#
